Three decades ago, a cheap plastic toy camera made by a small factory in Hong Kong was born. Nobody knew the Holga would revolutionize photography, or become a cult classic.

Invented by a camera factory worker, the medium format camera was meant to be a cheap product for Chinese consumers. Its name, Holga, is a play on the Cantonese phrase for “very bright.”

At first, people were unsure about it. The Holga produced photos that were marked by “flaws”—lens distortion, light leaks and framing vignettes. But people realized those marks gave the pictures such character that they wanted to throw their favorite subjects into the square frame of the Holga and admire the work of art that would come out later.

The camera’s simple operation also allowed it to free the photographer from the traditional pressures of framing, focusing and metering a scene. The Holga has just three aperture settings, a couple of pre set estimated focus points, and a single shutter speed. Just turn the wheel to set, point, and click.

That’s why the humble Holga continues to be heralded by Lomography enthusiasts for being perfectly compatible with their focus on spontaneity and love for capturing the moment.

The Holga classic is black with a textured body and takes 120 film. You're getting a roll of ultra-fine grain, vivid color Kodak Ektar 100 in each purchase, so your pictures really pop.
